Doctor Angelique Coetzee: Mild but unusual omicron symptoms

Dr. Angelique Coetzee is one of the first doctors in South Africa to have patients with the Omicron variant in their practice. In an interview with the English newspaper “The Telegraph” she reported unusual symptoms.

She became aware of the fact that young people were very tired, whereas a small baby had an exceptionally high pulse. In contrast to known variants, no patient would have complained of a loss of smell.

“Her symptoms were so different and so mild from those I had previously treated,” said Dr. Coetzee, who has been a general practitioner for 33 years, but also chair of the South African Medical Association.

In her practice alone, 24 patients tested positive for the new variant. The doctor told the Russian portal Sputnik: “We will only know after two weeks. Yes, it is transferable, but at the moment we as doctors do not know why there is so much hype while we are still investigating it. There are some Patients who are admitted to the hospital, and these are young people over 40 “.

maybe it’s not covid related at all - maybe another CDC blunder - rushing to judgement can have disastrous consequences.

Symptoms of Xi vaccine attributed to “variant”. Precautions included take two mail in ballots and call your doctor in the morning after the next election steel. Then you can have an abortion of all factual evidence.

Will the Omicron variant result in a general immunity to all Covid strains?

Beware the Omega variant!

“In her practice alone, 24 patients tested positive for the new variant.”

So, what is the test for the “new variant?”

Question: Has anyone here ever been tested for a specific variant? Is this part of the propaganda that no one ever questions?

For this particular genome, the standard PCR test can identify Omicron. PCR cannot identify delta, but it can this variant — probably because the sheer number of mutations are detected during the PCR cycles

Variants are not explored for individual patients because it would have no effect on treatment. Variant profiling via genomic sequencing is done over broad populations in order to know % predominance.

For Omicron, the standard PCR test IS able to identify it. Not so with Delta, but yes with Omicron, probably because the sheer number of mutations become detected in the PCR cycling.

That is a good question. Wonder how long it will be before some bright reporter asks that question. I am hoping someday a mild variant will give immunity and stop the virus forever.

The PCR test is testing for three different genes. In the Omicron variant the third gene - the S - is negative, so instead of three positive ones you will get two positive, one negative.

In theory a very contagious, but less pathogenic mutant would bring on herd immunity very much faster. Too early to say that omicron is that variant, but one could hope.

The Worldometer data for South Africa, actually shows the number of new cases dropping today (Sunday), and the increase of the increase was not as fast as on Thursday neither on Friday nor on Saturday. But of course it all depends how many people have been tested, so we have to wait a couple of weeks to see how it is trending.

The PCR test is simply positive or negative vs the control sample provided by the manufacturer of the panel. It doesn't tell you the variant. So far, ALL variants are testable using the original control samples of SARS-CoV2. There is no assay panel available specifically for the omicron variant. Determining variant and lineage requires genetic sequencing.

For now, omicron is just another variant. We won't know for a few weeks whether it will displace delta as a dominant strain, or if it is more dangerous, or if it will evade vaccine or natural immunity. The answer to almost every question about the omicron variant is "we don't know yet". It's just knee-jerk reactions and fear mongering so far.
