President Biden said Friday that he delayed implementation of a new ban on travel from southern Africa on the advice of his medical advisers, who are led by Dr. Anthony Fauci.
A reporter asked Biden why the emergency precaution will take effect Monday, rather than immediately to contain the potentially more contagious Omicron version of COVID-19.
“Why not do it now like other countries have done?” the journalist asked Biden, who is spending a long Thanksgiving weekend in Nantucket.
Biden said “because that was the recommendation coming from my medical team.” Fauci is Biden’s chief medical adviser and led a half hour briefing for Biden on Friday.
Biden said “we don’t know a lot about the variant except that it is of great concern and it seems to spread rapidly — and I spent about a half hour this morning with my COVID team led by Dr. Fauci and that was the decision we made.”
But Biden seemed to have a poor grasp on the travel rules. He misstated the number of countries impacted and said the policy would bar people traveling “to and from” the region, despite official releases only noting restrictions on travel from — but not to — southern Africa.

The United States will restrict travel from South Africa and seven other countries starting Monday over concerns of a “heavily mutated” COVID-19 variant, senior administration officials said.

The Biden administration will follow advice from Dr. Anthony Fauci and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and restrict travel from several African nations following the identification of variant B.1.1.529, which appears to be highly contagious among young people.
The World Health Organization (WHO) identified the variant as a “variant of concern” that officials first noted in South Africa.
The variant has been identified in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi as well.
About a dozen other countries, including the United Kingdom, will create similar travel restrictions.
Travel restrictions will not apply to American citizens and lawful permanent residents, but all international travelers must test negative prior to travel.

‘concerning and spreads rapidly’ so lets delay any type of travel into the country from S.Africa. Make sense...in Brandon World. Also lots of articles the last week or so about how most of Africa has escaped WuFlu infection, baffling ‘experts’. Now we have a Africa strain, how convenient. Just following the pattern like last year when India escaped WuFlu infection until the Delta Variant emerged early this year and spread everywhere...and how did India combat that?...Ivermectin and cases dropped 90% there. But we can’t do that in Western nations that are ‘free’, and people wonder why it’s called ‘plandemic’.
