The two-story house I had in Washington (state) had a propane fireplace in the downstairs "bonus room". Great for power outages, and with the downstairs location and the "hot air rises" effect, it would keep the whole house toasty.

Electric power where we were was notoriously unreliable (50 foot tall power lines, 150 foot tall fir trees separated by 20 feet...if somebody farted a tree limb (or tree) would take down power).

Sometimes simple is best! And old tech works for decades in most cases.
