Thousands of ‘fake students’ enrolled in California community colleges seeking financial aid

Public colleges disperse hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial aid to scammers; professor says it’s abuse of taxpayer dollars and real students can’t enroll in needed courses

The California Community Colleges system is being overwhelmed by thousands of fake students, or “bots,” applying and enrolling in classes to scam money from financial aid.

Kim Rich, a criminal justice professor at Pierce College, first noticed the issue during the summer semester in June 2021, when she discovered multiple “students” in her online class exhibiting suspicious behavior: submitting work done by someone outside the class, registering for the same courses, and using profile photos pulled from the internet.

Since then, Rich says she has experienced “roadblock after roadblock” in bringing the issue to the administration’s attention. The district seems not to care, even though, as she previously told The Epoch Times, Rich believes between one-third to one-half of enrolled students could be fake.

She came to these numbers by surveying hundreds of class rosters, both from her own college and other schools in the system.

Being a ‘low life’ isn’t about how much money or education you have. It’s about whether or not you have any morality / ethics / integrity / dignity. Unfortunately, we are becoming a low life nation, in which what ever you can get away with is fair game.

Well, it worked for COVID unemployment… now it’s time to scam the taxpayers for “student” aid money. Life is good in Nigeria and among our US resident scammer community.

Well if the money is coming from the state or feds, there’s no incentive for the schools to disqualify anybody. Gravy for everybody!

Financial Aid fraud has been around since the beginning of awarding financial aid.

What’s interesting to me here is that the fraudsters are now meeting the roster verification requirements, which handled a lot of the fraud in face to face classes and they are taking a significant portion of seats in some classes. I wonder if someone isn’t trying to bot their way through a degree and then sell the diploma.

Until the feds audit some of these districts, slap them with fines and suspend financial aid for all students, the good professor will need to keep fighting.

Look on the bright side. Less real students turned into Libs. Less real students racking up a large student loan.

Kim Rich is a colleague and friend of mine. She is an Administration of Justice (Criminal Justice) professor. She is a decent person who was willing to speak up. Kim was recognized (positively) by our college administrators for discovering this fraud problem.

Having said that, all Calif. colleges are extreme Left (duh) --and they've seen a steady decline in enrollment numbers over the last decade.

To add students to the shrinking rosters, they have programs set up on Calif college campuses which actively recruit and welcome enrollment by illegals.

"Undocumented students" are explicitly encouraged to become students at California campuses -- at US taxpayer expense. Our district even has an "Undocu-Day" - a welcome fair for illegals in Los Angeles to attend college - each year at our campus. Hard to believe? Yes. Blatantly illegal? YES.

They may say that they don't want "fake" students," but they certainly want illegal students. The teachers union, AFT (from which I get regular emails) is very worried about falling enrollment since it means falling revenues for unionized workers and union power.

Fake students are OK as long as they are vaccinated.

Fake poli sci, climate science, and economics majors will be well prepared for careers in government.

We had an epidemic of people enrolling at the community college, taking out school loans and then dropping out to be refunded the loan money.

Considering the collect the financial aid, it would probably be significantly lesss than an actual degree.

thinden law:

eg #1: for every gummit dollar p’off on programs like the “un docu-day program”, there is an equal & opposite amount of income to a leftist lawyer, leftist union, dem party, campaign consultant, community organizer, dem pol foundation, dem pol campaign contribution (vig), book deal, liberal PACs, or other NGO organization

eg # 2: for every gummit dollar p’off on supporting illegal immigrants with college education, housing, snap, health insurance, stimulus checks, there is an equal & opposite amount of income going to leftist lawyers, leftist unions, dem party, campaign consultants, community organizers, dem pol foundation, dem pol campaign contribution (vig), book deal, liberal PACs, or other NGO organizations, coyotes, or criminal cartels

Free college (either officially or through grants and loans that nowadays do not get repaid). Plus, those loans can include living expenses (room, board, transport, etc.)..
and again, they do not get repaid.
SO it is FREE MONEY (and many colleges give away free groceries and free or discounted cafeteria tickets for hot prepared meals too, also free health care services.

hey, why work?
(the classes can be selected to be super easy and fun ones...and the profs are all rated on how well they attract AND “RETAIN” students.... so the profs almost never “drop” any students for not showing up....)

result:
1. free rides for the supposed students
2. with living expenses included
3. fun classes or you just don’t bother showing up
4. profs get to keep their jobs (just try to enforce academic standards and see these grifter “students” disappear like greased lightning, ha!)
5. labor shortages throughout the workforce
6. supply/service interruptions
7. oh yeah, taxpayers get to pay for it all, too

The district seems not to care,

Because this scam only works with someone high up the food chain working on the inside pushing the paperwork through
