They will never catch up, because it will require at least two years of extra education. Not to mention that, as children get older, the brain prunes unneeded neural pathways, so there may be some skills that some children never learn adequately.

Parents are responsible for their children’s education, not the schools. Do what you have to do.

I did a quick search and there are only about a dozen states that mandate kindergarden. So, first grade may be the first introduction to school for 6yo’ds out in flyover land where competing to get into inner city elite schools begins age 2.

Because of this I don’t believe this story that there’s a calamity befalling all 6yo’ds in first grade. The elite school parents most likely never let up being helicopter moms, since a majority of them worked at home or were at home, and the suburban and rural kids were being kids, with parents reading bedtime stories and homeschooling themselves. Leaving the neglected kids who would be neglected pandemic or no.

"Pandemic first graders" ? So that's what they're calling "them" now.

Homeschool. Catch up.

I would say the same. Every year homeschooling puts them ahead of their public school age group by two or three years.

Actually, unless you are highly eulexic, many kids are not ready for academic work at age six. The prime learning years are ages 10 through 15, which is the age at which we perversely let our kids go off the rails after cramming their little brains from age 5 to 9.

“Most years, by the third week of first grade, Heather Miller is working with her class on writing the beginning, middle and end of simple words.”

There you go, it’s like phonics doesn’t even exist in Texas public schools.

PATHETIC, but explains why kids aren’t learning to read (unless they’re getting outside help).

That may be so...

But the really important thing is that they (the government’s children, K-12) are up to date and totally immersed in LGBT, porn instruction films, anal sex, masturbation, and abortion...

However, it wasnt just six year olds that were out of school. We also kept children out during their prime years.

To each their own. My kids SUCKED IT UP when they were 3 to 10, and were years ahead of their ‘normally educated’ peers. Same for the other kids I tutored.

“Most years, by the third week of first grade, Heather Miller is working with her class on writing the beginning, middle and end of simple words.”

Reminds me of the Monty Python Skit:

Interviewer Well... lets move on to our guest who not only lives in Essex but also speaks only the ends of words. Mr Ohn Ith. Mr Ith, good evening.

Enter from back of set as per Eamonn Andrews show Mr Ohn Ith. He sits at the desk
Mr Ith ... ood ... ing.
Interviewer Nice to have you on the show.
Mr Ith ... ice ... o ... e ... ere.
Interviewer Mr Ith, don’t you find it very difficult to make yourself understood?
Mr Ith Yes, it is extremely difficult.
Interviewer Just a minute, you’re a fraud
Mr Ith Oh no. I can speak the third and fourth sentences perfectly normally.
Interviewer Oh I see. So your next sentence will be only the ends of words again?
Mr Ith T’s... ight.
Interviewer Well, let’s move on to our next guest who speaks only the beginnings of words, Mr J ... Sm... Mr Sm... good evening.

Enter Mr Sm.
Mr Sm G... e...
Interviewer Well, have you two met before?
Mr Sm N...
Mr Ith ... o
Mr Sm N...
Mr Ith ... o
Interviewer Well, this is really a fascinating occasion because we have in the studio Mr ... oh ... I ... who speaks only the middles of words. Good evening.

Enter Scot.
Scot .... oo ...... ni...
Interviewer Um, where do you come from?
Scot . .. u... i... a...
Interviewer Dunfermline in Scotland. Well let me introduce you, Mr Ohn Ith...
Mr Ith ... ood ... ing.
Scot ... oo ...... ni...
Interviewer J... Sm...

Interviewer Yes, well, ha, ha, just a moment. Perhaps you would all like to say good evening together.
Mr Sm G...

Heck, by the end of the second grade I discovered I could read just about any book - drinking from a fire hose. The Sunday New York Times had 12 sections in those days, and I read them all. I don’t remember what an 8-year-old made of the articles about trends in commercial real estate and reviews of nightclub acts, but if it was in print and before me, into the maw it went.

But speaking realistically, many kids of that age are still struggling with the little kid books.

“But speaking realistically, many kids of that age are still struggling with the little kid books.”

That’s because they use ‘sight words’ (aka, repackaged Whole Language) rather than phonics through 3rd grade. Teach kids phonics when they’re 8, they’ll learn to read when they’re 8. Teach them phonics when they’re 4, they’ll learn to read when they’re 4. Asians know this, which is why they have their very young kids taught reading and basic math long before the schools get around to it. Others don’t seem able to figure it out and just throw their kids into the grinder (and then are often told that their kids are ‘slow learners’ - LOL!!!).
