“The big news on Friday was that after being accused of crossing state lines, killing two people and wounding another last year during a Black Lives Matter protest, Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted on all counts,” Colbert began.
A few clarifications are needed, such as :
1. Kyle Rittenhouse lives in Antioch, Illinois, which is right on the state line with Wisconsin. He has family and friends in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and also worked there. Kenosha is about 20 miles from his home. The implication that he traveled “across state lines”, implying he traveled a long distance to another state which he had no connection to, is factually incorrect.
2. It was not a “Black Lives Matter protest”. It was a riot. It was a violent riot, not a mere peaceful protest.
3. The implication that he went there to shoot people is also demonstrably false. He defended himself when attacked. The one guy he shot who survived, testified in the trial that he pulled his own gun on Kyle before Kyle shot him in self defense.
Gaige Grosskreutz testified that he rushed Rittenhouse with a loaded pistol in his hand, and Rittenhouse did not fire until he pointed that pistol, with a chambered round, at Rittenhouse's head. Grosskreutz is lucky to be alive. Grosskreutz's testimony virtually precludes any possibility that he will be able to prevail in a civil suit against Rittenhouse.
