I have seen that 60 minutes interview and have a much more charitable interpretation of that particular story.
What I rely on is the great book “Under the Frog” by Tibor Fischer. It’s based on Tibor’s father’s stories, who was born around the same time and escaped Hungary in 1956.
Kids growing up at that time in Hungary had been surrounded by insanity their whole lives. Kids being as they are they just accepted it because it had been the only world they had known.
It didn’t necessarily seem strange that young George was put to work delivering letters (not bullying) because insane as it is, everything else they had known since being old enough to understand something about the world had also been insane.
