(CNN)Most of the 250 permanent residents of a volcanic Italian island have been told to evacuate after levels of carbon dioxide in the air spiked dangerously, causing respiratory problems to people and their pets.

Carbon dioxide levels around the volcanic island of Vulcano in the Aeolian archipelago off the north coast of Sicily have risen from 80 tons to 480 tons, effectively reducing the amount of oxygen in the air, according to the Italian National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV)....

...In a message on the Lipari Comune's Facebook page, Giorgianni explained Sunday that the evacuation is not because of the threat of an imminent eruption, but because of the dangerous emission of gases....

The Italian island of Vulcano is off the coast of Barcellona

from the AFAR travel guide: "Active volcanoes are thrilling, and the aptly named Vulcano, an Aeolian Island that's separated from Lipari by a small strait, delivers with sulfurous odor emanating from its fumaroles. For the fit, a trek up the 499-meter-high (1,639-foot) Gran Cratere offers an even greater thrill. In the ocean all around the island, there are impressive sea stacks and grottoes. Thermal baths and the Spiaggia di Sabbia Nera (Black Sand Beach) is a popular day-trip, followed by a fish lunch on the waterfront in Porto di Levante."

The measurements they are using make NO sense whatever! “from 80 to 480 tons”? Really, WTF does that even mean?

The scientists have a giant vacuum that they suck up the volcano cloud and then put it in a bag and weigh it.

Pro Tip:

Tons = US measurements

Tonnes = Metric measurements

Tons. No time, no reference for volume whatever.

For those of us that understand basic fractions and counting conventions, they have given us a numerator WITH NO DENOMINATOR!!

Not tons per, just tons of.

BTW, nice attempt at condescension. It was so weak I didn’t notice until I re-read your post.

Mistkopf.

It probably means tons per cubic kilometer or something like that. Unfortunately my Sigurdson is at another property.

Residents evacuated from Italian island Volcano over carbon dioxide levels

The residents should have paid attention to Genius Greta Thunberg and switched to electric cars.

That is just silly... Only manmade CO2 is harmful... organic naturally occurring non-GMO CO2 is fine. /s

Maybe this volcano can be a plaintiff in the Supremes case involving the EPA.

It's the fault of the Italians - they should have switched to electric volcanoes ages ago!

I’ve been to Vulcano. Stopped there briefly enroute to Lipari and the Salina. Vulcano stinks of sulfur. How anyone can live there is a mystery to me.
