In Kenosha and beyond, guns become more common on US streets
The Associated Press ^ | November 21, 2021 | By MORGAN LEE (D-AP)

As Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted in two killings that he said were self-defense, armed civilians patrolled the streets near the Wisconsin courthouse with guns in plain view.

In Georgia, testimony in the trial of Ahmaud Arbery’s killers showed that armed patrols were commonplace in the neighborhood where Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man, was chased down by three white men and shot.

The two proceedings sent startling new signals about the boundaries of self-defense as more guns emerge from homes amid political and racial tensions and the advance of laws that ease permitting requirements and expand the allowable use of force.

Across much of the nation, it has become increasingly acceptable for Americans to walk the streets with firearms, either carried openly or legally concealed. In places that still forbid such behavior, prohibitions on possessing guns in public could soon change if the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down a New York law.

The new status quo for firearms outside the home was on prominent display last week in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Local resident Erick Jordan carried a rifle and holstered handgun near the courthouse where Rittenhouse was tried for killing two men and wounding a third with an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle during a protest last year.

“I got a job to do — protect these people. That’s it,” said Jordan, referring to speakers at a news conference that was held in the hours after the verdict.

"acquital" is a vaguer term than "judged to be not guilty by a jury of his peers."

"two killings that he said were self-defense" is also far less definitive than what we saw in the evidence and from the jury.

Why is the AP fuzzing up the lines? I think most see what they're doing.

I’m very skeptical of this story because I really hope it’s true.

That particular idiot is clearly Eurpoean, and wouldn’t know the business end of a rifle if it poked them in the rear.

That has been obvious for 20 years for me. They lie by both omission and commission.

I wasn’t a daily carrier until the rioting started last June.

Now I never leave home without it.

Brownshirts wearing black shirts and Burning Looting Mobs make it necessary.

Do we know any background about Arbery that would tilt the odds one way or theo other? Possible past convictions?

Like what?

I mostly agree with you that self-defense (or not) arguments tend to be in the moment, although motivation seems to be a factor in the arguments, whether it should or not.

I think the Atlanta bunch honestly believed he was a prowler.

I think at some point after being chased by the pickup trucks, Arbery believed his life was in danger. Maybe that’s why he (allegedly) grabbed for the shotgun.

In the struggle, it went off.

Its hard to believe this won’t wind up as aggravated manslaughter. But both sides have a story to tell, and if there’s any background info, I’d be curious to hear it, especially as I’m not on the jury.

Defund the Police plus Antifa Riots lead to more people arming themselves.
What else did they expect?

“Across much of the nation, it has become increasingly acceptable for Americans to walk the streets with firearms, either carried openly or legally concealed”

...either openly or legally concealed...

Well, d’uh. What’s the problem with that?

I watched a guy on Tucker Carlson the other day that believes the prosecution against Kyle Rittenhouse was purely political and his acquittal is a spike in the heart against gun confiscation which is why the media, DNC, BLM, NAACP, SPLC, ACLU and everybody else on the left is so apoplectic over it. Now they are going full on batshit crazy.

I have to agree with him, and suspect they were not expecting this and are working feverishly planning the next round of riots and mob activity. They will indeed burn this entire nation to the ground to get what they want.

armed civilians patrolled the streets near the Wisconsin courthouse with guns in plain view.

And sadly, most of those civilians are far more trustworthy, law-abiding, and responsible than most cops.

This AP doofus would crap himself if he spent any time in our little Idaho town.
No one pays any attention to the dad, or mom, pushing a shopping cart down the isles of our market, with a couple kids in tow and mom and dad both packing open.
