She never ran as an independent. She ran as a Republican write-in candidate.
This time around there is no party primary at all. Top 4 finishers go on to the general election, and then there is ranked-choice balloting...so she could be a second or third choice and still win even if collectively the overwhelming majority of voters vote against her.
