Yep and “squaw wood” will forever in my jargon be “dead branches, still on the tree” and the just-after-tinder ingredient of all my camping fires. Ketowah and Shawnee ancestors here, by the way.

I believe the ski area did change that name a few years ago.

“So square is a derogatory term for woman. Well guess what? Broad is another derogatory term.”

OMG, no!! One of the two rivers that join to form the TN River just east of Knoxville, TN is named the “French Broad River.” What’s the poor TVA, a Federal agency to do???

The reality is more like Mark Twain described it. Indian women were worth less than horses. If he suspected his woman was cheating on him, he would bite off the end of her nose to disfigure her. Otherwise, women were pack animals, to carry heavy loads from place to place. Old women were discarded. Of course the reality varied a lot from tribe to tribe.

There is debate among Indian tribes as to whether the word squaw is even derogative, or is more like the word “miss” in English, or “Fraulein” in German.

Most of the complaints about the word are from white people.

I guess the censors will go to work on the writings of Lewis and Clark, and the works of George Catlin who used the word quite often.

When Catlin did his paintings of the chiefs of the tribe, he wanted to also do the squaws of the chiefs.
The chiefs felt insulted as a squaw was not worth being painted. Catlin finally got their OK when he said he would show the painting of the woman BELOW the painting of the chiefs to show the woman was subservient to the man.

Wonder how that would work tin today”s world!

"Just another signal of virtue from the elites..."

Since Deb Haaland is a Native American (Pueblo Indian from the Southwestern U.S.) her banning of the word "squaw" (derived from the Algonquian word, "squa," of the Massachuset Indian tribe is simply tribalist hatred for another group of Indians and their language, in addition to her racial hatred rant slurring White people (sometimes denigrated as "white" people).

Haaland should be ashamed of herself. The United States is certainly ashamed of her and her racist behavior.

***Indian women were worth less than horses.***

I believe George Catlin also said something similar. In the tribes the woman was basically just a slave. In the tribal wars many men took on extra wives when their men were killed. They got more done that way.

As some jokester said...

“The Indian men had the perfect world, All they had to do was hunt, fight, fish, and make little Indians, because the women did all the work. Then along came the white man and messed it all up”.

North of me about 20 minutes is the town of Manasquan, NJ.

The name comes from a Lenape Indian word , roughly translated as ‘’old woman river’’.

It described the women of the tribe who would catch fish and crayfish along it’s banks.
