A pair of New York Times journalists who recently set out to explore what happens when Democrats control all the levels of power in state and local governments across the country were shocked to discover that "blue states" — not red ones — "are the problem."
"What do Democrats actually do when they have all the power?" Times video journalist Johnny Harris asked at the outset of an opinion video posted by the paper last week.
Harris teamed up with Times editorial board writer Binyamin Appelbaum to examine why famously liberal states — such as New York, California, and Washington — struggle to advance the progressive policies despite little to no Republican opposition.
They focused on three core initiatives of the Democratic Party platform: affordable housing, economic equality, and educational opportunity. And in the end, they discovered that "liberal hypocrisy," not Republican opposition, "is fueling American inequality" and that things are actually much worse in blue states than they are in red.

Wow, when one political party has a monopoly on power, there is no incentive to be responsive to the people’s needs. Whodathunkit?
The Rats here in California have promised to do something about the insane cost of living and the closely related homelessness problem here for decades. Still no result. They know they can’t blame the Republicans when they have a supermajority in the state legislature, so they just promise to do a better job after you re-elect them. Just like Lucy promising Charlie Brown she won’t yank the football away next time.

When you empower a pimp to fix the “prostitution problem” don’t be surprised when more whores hit the streets.
“Just like Lucy promising Charlie Brown she won’t yank the football away next time.”
That would make a VERY effective ad for R’s in CA.
Leave it to lefty journalists to phrase “are in power” to politicians.
People by the droves forget they work for us.
I am stealing that line. Perfect analogy
Liberal states struggle to enact liberal policies? Author is delusional.

NY Times journalists discover the media helped cause all the problems looking for fall guy.
I am amazed that they are telling themselves they should look in the mirror. Not that they’ll ever do it. I know they won’t.
There was a point last summer when my kids tried to tell me that I was racist. I asked them why every time school choice or vouchers came up for vote, they were voted down by Democrats (ie. teachers unions). I always voted for things to help the underserved get OUT of their hell holes. Democrats always keep them there. My kids finally shut up about that issue.
the video is a scam. The kind of clever BS that is the way of the commie libs. The video has agenda 21 written all over it. It was a hidden hit piece on single family housing. At that point, it was obvious they were full of shit.

The problem isn't any difficulty in advancing progressive policies, it's that the policies don't work, and that is obviously what is really going on here. Dig a bit deeper and you arrive at the less comfortable question, can such policies work? Deeper still, what happens when they don't, are they analyzed and altered, or are they doubled down on?
Less comfortable still, are the ideals behind such policies flawed? That is the root of the problem and the thing never addressed. Abstractions such as equity, freedom, safety, peace - these are commandeered, considered the exclusive possessions of the progressive left, unquestionable even where they obviously conflict and reach the level of unattainable fantasy. The author points out the obvious when he states that their policies aren't delivering what they want, but what if what they want is wrong?
Another issue is their constituencies conflict. Can’t build lots of ‘affordable housing’ when getting construction approvals past environmentalists stops them.
What do the Democrats do when they have all the power? They seek more! They are never satisfied.
