The hand-printed signs, in neat block letters, appeared in the Tulum marketplace the morning after two tourists were shot dead and three others wounded at a roadside eatery in the bohemian Mexican resort town.
“Attention merchants of Tulum … this was a warning,” said the sign, which went on to threaten “managers and owners” of bars and restaurants on the “Mini Quinta” tourist zone. That’s where the foreigners, visiting the Malquerida Bar last month, had the bad luck of getting caught in cartel crossfire.
The signs were photographed by a local citizens’ advocacy group, which posted them to social media. The message threatened death to merchants who refuse to fork over bribes to the drug trafficking gangs and was signed by Los Pelones — “the bald ones.”

What about Los Angeles?
Not sure why you would blame it on the language.
My late wife and I had a 30th Anniversary trip to Cancun in 2016; first time we had ever been to Mexico. It was a wonderful trip. The only disturbing part was that our resort was across the street from the U.S. Consulate, and one day there were a whole lot of soldiers, military vehicles and machine guns in the parking lot. Don’t know what that was all about. Maybe a democrat was taking a vacation at our expense.
Anyway, even though this was in a very secure “resort area,” I don’t think I would go back there right now.

Call it a cultural indicator.

Andorra? Equatorial Guinea? Argentina?
Some writer from the third world NewYork City going to tel me not to go to Mexico? It hasn’t been safe to go down there since 1999.
The pyramid at Tulum is cool until you realize humans were being sacrificed at the top 500 years ago.
I will have to agree with Lurker. Especially the cultural indicator part. Those countries colonized by Spain - in my opinion and view - seem not to have the same view of the value of life as English settled countries. Countries where English law and tradition were implemted and for some, self-government was the way.
Right now means never ever.
I can name a few humans who we deserve to sacrifice.
As a rule we never travel anywhere settled by the Spanish or the French. Mexico doubles that as it was settled by both. They never had a chance.
If it was settled by the English or Dutch, we are good.

How does one generate bribe money without customers....
How the general populace thinks about God, The Bible, and a Living Christ is a dividing line. There is no morality to speak of in Mexico.
Wait until all the Mexicans are here.
Was just in Nuevo Progreso two days ago. All seemed fine. I understand it is the one border town that is not important enough for the cartels to fight over. Amazing number of dentists and pharmacies.
… you do know the United States was colonized by France at one time??
