Yup. I was ten in 1963, when my dad took me, for the first time, to the Greyhound terminal in downtown LA for a solo trip to Salinas (300 miles) to see my grandparents. He always gave me a fiver for lunch money and tipped the driver the same amount to keep an eye on me. Only problem I ever had was not having a quarter to use the pay toilet.
I could not imagine a parent doing the same today.
