There were chaotic scenes on the Bruzgi-Kuźnica border crossing, where crowds of migrants could be seen breaking up concrete blocks and gathering tree branches to throw toward the Polish side.
Loud bangs rang out over the crowds and a dense cloud of smoke hung overhead. Belarusian state media BeITA reported that the water cannons used by Polish forces sprayed a yellow liquid that caused burning, and that people were suffocating and feeling sick from the smoke. A CNN team was hit by the water fired by Polish guards.
According to BelTA, the deputy head of the Belarusian Armed Forces' Department of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection and Ecology, Igor Malyk, told reporters that Polish security forces had used "toxic chemicals" against refugees.
The Polish Border Guard said Tuesday that migrants camped out near the Bruzgi-Kuźnica checkpoint were behaving "aggressively," throwing stones and various objects at the Polish services. "In order to prevent illegal border crossing, water cannons were used against aggressive foreigners," the security agency said on Twitter.
It's unclear what sparked Tuesday's confrontations but there is a growing sense of frustration among migrants that Europe is not welcoming them.
Families could be seen walking away from the scene of clashes, with exhausted children in tow, some carried aloft on their parent's shoulders. Asked by CNN where he was going, one man said: "Back to Iraq. Goodbye Belarus."

Water cannons is too nice.
Water Cannon, great idea, it’s been near freezing every night. Eventually they will all go home.
Back to Iraq. Sounds like a campaign slogan.
Considering their behavior at the border, they shouldn’t have to look far for a reason.
But they don’t seem to get that assaulting people whose country you want to invade is not going to get you the Welcome Wagon.
They need the microwave area denial radars.
They need to add some of that skunk odorant, or whatever it is that can be used to repel protestors and break up riots.
Here’s an idea: fix your own country.

I keep hearing that border walls don’t work. Seems to be doing great in Poland. I would like to see the water cannons in Texas.
Migrants wasted a fortunate buying plane tickets to Minsk from their airports in the Middle East. Now Turkey and UAE among others are banning Syrian, Yemeni and Iraqi from flying to Minsk.

Some serious response to these anarchists would go a long way towards settling things down.
It’s easy to act like this when you know that there’s going to be little serious retribution.
When you think you could pay with your life, it would give you a little more pause to consider if it was worth it.
Same goes for criminals of all stripes. If they didn’t know if they were going to make it home that night, crime would drop like a rock.
In some of the US riots the Antifa rioters didn't notice because that's the usual way they smell. Like the hippie days.
That would be a risk they’d have to take.
Maybe some cheap, old lady perfume?
