Armenia on Tuesday asked Russia to help defend it against Azerbaijan after a border clash in which it said 15 of its soldiers had been killed, 12 captured, and two combat positions had been lost.
The fighting was the worst since a 44-day war last year fought between ethnic Armenian forces and the Azeri army over the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave which killed at least 6,500 people and ended in a decisive victory for Azerbaijan.
That conflict ended after Russia brokered a peace deal and deployed almost 2,000 peacekeepers to the region. Turkey took the side of Azerbaijan, which took back swathes of land it had lost in an earlier conflict.

Our country and the rest of the West is committing suicide.
Hold my beer and watch this!
Yeah, Turks and Armenians ain’t quite warmed up to each other yet. Mrs rktman when to Armenia not long after the soviet became “un-union” to help teach folks how to be in business and be entrepreneurs. Soviets dropped everything in place when they left. Power and water were intermittent. Mostly off. Plenty of high rise low rent apartments just like brandon and his assclowns want for us. Think valjar and cabrini green in chiraq. So she should not have much problem when that starts in earnest here.
Maybe Poots will do us a solid?
Poots will carefully operate to stabilize both Armenia and Azerbaijan including Turkey's influence on both, because they are near Russia. He will be partially successful at both, he will make more friends than enemies, and expand the Russian economy and trade.
Would love to see the Russian Bear crush the filthy Turks.
Maybe soon. /spit
It might be argued that it kicks in now. This puts the Russians in the position to take care of the Azeris...whether they pound them diplomatically or militarily will be a Russian choice.
One thing is for certain: Azerbaijan cannot survive a direct confrontation with the Russian Army.
I agree with you. Russia has close ties to both Armenia and Azerbaijan, although they are culturally closer to Armenia. They will work to stabilize the situation as best they can.
Sounds positively Russian to me! :)
Neither you nor I will get what we want,
The Turks have been around for a long time and will continue to be.
There is considerable trade and tourism between Turkey and Russia including military hardware.
Neither will give that up. Putin is likely to thread the needle, in any case, he'll come close.
The days of Western Sabotage are over.
Yep, and they'll try to expand trade with all the players while soothing grievances.
The azeris have tremendous oil wealth to finance their adventures, but that is also their achilles heel How many surface to surface tactical missiles , drone-strikes, or determined airstrikes would it take to destroy their oil industry?
