KYIV (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Saturday it would speed up the construction of a naval base at the port of Berdyansk to prevent what Kyiv calls a gradual attempt by Moscow to take control of the Sea of Azov that flows past Russian-annexed Crimea.

Ukraine's newly-appointed defence minister announced the plans after a trip to Berdyansk that followed Western warnings this week about Russian troop movements near Ukraine's borders and a possible attack.

Russia has dismissed as inflammatory suggestions Moscow might be weighing an attack and accused Washington of aggressive moves in the Black Sea where Ukraine and the United States held military drills on Saturday.

Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said it was vital for Ukraine to strengthen its naval forces. "The corresponding instructions will be given to accelerate the construction of the naval base," Reznikov said in a statement.

There is nothing Ukraine wants more than a limited war with Russia, and to be bailed out by "the west".

Franklin Roosevelt put sanctions on Japan and ended up getting what he wanted out of it.

War with Germany.

That’s cool, but they are blocked in as long as they keep pushing their war in the Donbass because Russia won’t allow them to sail under their new bridge to Crimea. They fear the Ukes would blow it up.

NATO is a lot closer. Let them handle it. Or not.

Nukes don’t solve anything, they will never be used again. 1945 was first and last time.

I suspect we'll see them used again - all it takes is "plausible deniability", and a marshmallow in the White House. Picture Sum of All Fears with no Hollywood heroes to save the day...

Uh... The US is the biggest part of NATO. I think you mean the EU.

No, I do mean NATO. Almost all NATO countries are in EU except USA and Canada make them a lot closer then us.

If NATO makes a decision to act with equal participation from all countries then fine. If the EU wants to input into that process fine.

I wonder how many of the workers building this base are Russian agents. Everybody is rattling swords including Russia and the US, but with President shrub, there is always the chance that things will get seriously out of control. China could attack Taiwan at the same time to see what the US will do.
