Taxed Lawrence school staff get longer Thanksgiving break

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Another Kansas school district is extending its Thanksgiving break to a full week to give overwhelmed staff a reprieve.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the school board approved a plan Friday to turn Nov. 22 and Nov. 23 — a Monday and a Tuesday — into wellness and self-care days. Staff already had the rest of the week off.

Superintendent Anthony Lewis told the board during the meeting that the time off was needed because faculty and staff were at a breaking point from the stress and other difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The pandemic has been difficult because faculty and staff are stretched thin. Lewis said they were being asked to help fill roles and duties that are currently unfilled because of staff and substitute teacher shortages. In some cases, faculty and staff are giving up their planning and lunch periods to fill in.

I can already predict the kind of responses that will roll in here. But I'm burned out as well.

I worked through the entire so-called "pandemic" and haven't had a real vacation in years. Due to downsizing, people not wanting to work, and supply chain issues, it's been nonstop for me and I'm doing the job of three people (easily) at my current company.

I guess I'll get a break at some point - I'll just call it "retirement" when it does come.

At least they are not poisoning the children’s minds on those extra days.

The film “Idiocracy” (2007) pops into my mind about 3 times a day.
This movie held up a prophetic mirror to the coming direction of our culture.
Now with a quick 15 years after my sons first insisted I watch it, I’ve never forgotten this strange film and recognize that we are being groomed to adjust to a new normal. No way, Jose!

Thanksgiving already? Dang. It seems like just last week Lawrence celebrated Neewollah.

Yeah, must be tough on the poor Libs. So much indoctrination to do and so little time.

It is well accepted that 80% of the workload is carried by 20% of the workforce.

Suck it up and get yourself a raise. If they won’t give you one (40% minimum) get going with the resume. In case you didn’t know this it is a very strong employees market.

Please show a little sympathy. They’ve been working almost five days a week for three months in a row! Except for vacation, sick days, and personal wellness days of course.

Hats off to you. I’ve been working through this ‘’pandemic’’ in a hospital ER. Been exposed four times, seen people die almost daily, worked 12 hour shifts, worked and still working understaffed, I’m a housekeeper, there’s myself and one other person, sometimes a third to clean an 80 room ER.

Love the job though. Does get wearying but I keep at it. Got no choice. Got to keep going till I drop.

Yep, WTF is right. I've had to watch some tenants not pay their rent, watch them blow their stimulus checks on fun and games...all while still having to provide them services.

I don't want to hear from these people (school staff).
