Gohmert ‘Exploring’ a Run for Texas Attorney General
Texas Scorecard ^ | November 9, 2021 | Jeramy Kitchen

On Tuesday, Texas U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R–TX) announced his candidacy for Texas attorney general, joining four others in the race for the Republican nomination.

The incumbent, Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, has found himself at the center of controversy in recent years, prompting additional challenges from current Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman, and current State Rep. Matt Krause (R–Haslet).

On his campaign website, Gohmert says, “We need a Texas Attorney General whose top attorneys working for him have not found it necessary to send a letter to the FBI urging an investigation into corruption of their boss.”

Larger Primary Field Increases Likelihood of Runoff Election

Gohmert has served in the U.S. Congress since 2005 and is a member of the Congressional House Freedom Caucus. He is consistently rated as one of the most conservative congressmen by groups like Heritage Action, Club for Growth, FreedomWorks, and the American Conservative Union.

Gohmert served as a state district judge from 1992 to 2002, and he was appointed by then-Governor Rick Perry to serve as chief justice on Texas’ 12th Court of Appeals.

His candidacy likely will split conservative voters and activist organizations in the lead-up to the primary election currently scheduled for March 1, 2022.

The candidate filing deadline is December 13, 2021.

The good news is that if Gohmert runs, it would virtually assure that George P. Bush will not be elected as the next Texas Attorney General. George Pee sees the controversy surrounding Paxton, the current AG, as an opportunity to make the next step in his political career moving up from TX Land Commissioner to TX AG. His following step would then be to run for TX governor and later, president. He is backed by the same Bush establishment that raised $100 million for Jeb in the 2016 campaign.

Paxton has been a conservative icon since entering Texas politics as a state representative in 2002 and moving up to attorney general. He has been an outstanding TX AG. It is difficult to know what to believe about the alleged scandal surrounding Paxton. If interested read the following: Unraveling a Scandal in the Office of the Attorney General. Texans are being asked to pick sides in a sordid fight, despite not yet knowing all the facts.

U.S. Rep Gohmert would make an excellent TX AG, however his influence in congress would be missed. Just do a search on FR on Gohmert to see how effective and active he has been in championing conservative causes.

He’d make a difference in Texas. Congress is likely lost for the rest of Gohmert’s life, will take more than a few cycles to get a critical mass of MAGA in Congress, if ever.

The only institution capable of fixing Congress, is Congress, and I don’t think it has the fortitude or ability to trim its own sails.

Paxton seems a decent, competent guy.

And I believe the same staffers Gohmert would then have would still be willing to ask the FBI to look into him.

Gohmert is one of my favorites. Tough and never backs down.

Lemme guess. Leftist public employees who can't be fired.

Paxton seems a decent, semi-competent guy. On the right side of almost every issue, but pretty clumsy at getting things done and avoiding trouble.

Read your link. Ok sounds like he started to cut in on his employees scams, e.g. his subordinate telling him he couldn’t sign contracts when there were some contracts that only he could sign.

I think Louis would be an excellent chief law enforcement official, and I would hate to be a criminal if he were in that office.

The younger Bush should have run for another lower office and prove himself vs. just using his name ID. I don’t believe in political dynasties - nor do I agree it should automatically be a disqualifier, either, if you have other family members who have held political office - if he earns it and proves himself worthy, fine. But no entitlements to hold office just because of your name and pedigree.

Right now most conservatives think of GEORGE P as a chip in the JEB BUSH Guacamole bowl.

Oh my gosh I could really go for that. I despise Cornrow and haven’t voted for him in ages. He needs to go like years ago. Gotta get these RINO’s out once and for all.......

Cornyn is not up for reelection this cycle. Louis is best in the house... Personally I’d like to see his as Speaker certainly over McCarthy!!!! His argument is that Paxton can not win in the general which is also the mantra of George P. Gohmert says if he gets 1 million in contributions by Dec. 10 he’ll run for AG, other wise he’ll rerun for his house seat! I’ve contributed to him in past but I’m going to hold off until his house election fund drive.

You may or may not know that Geo. P has been Texas Land Commissioner since his election in 2014 during which he garnered the most votes of any state-wide candidate. He is however NOT going to be the Attorney General of Texas.... at least this go-around!
