President “Brandon” manages to make Warren G. Harding look both noble and a paragon of wisdom and constraint.
Yet Harding became disgraced and steeped in ignominy after his untimely demise, and the truth came out and was made known by his successor, Calvin Coolidge. The famed “Teapot Dome” scandal, which became widely known after the then Secretary of the Interior, Albert Fall, contrived to secretly transfer the access to the Teapot Dome oil reserve in Wyoming, then assigned to the US Navy, as a strategic reserve, back to the Department of the Interior and proceeded to open it up for exploitation to some “Big Oil” tycoons. Because of secret deals cooked up between Secretary Fall and some of the oil company tycoons, a LOT of money (for the times, this was the 1920’s) changed hands and the circle took in Harding. Until the advent of “Watergate”, this was the biggest scandal that had ever rocked the Presidency, and it threatened to take down the Republicans for good and all. But Coolidge wisely distanced himself from the scandal, and prosecution of the remaining conspirators began in 1926 and continued into 1929, after Coolidge had left the White House.
