COVID-19 cases surging in Minnesota

Minnesota's COVID-19 indicators continued to show a worsening pandemic on Tuesday with more cases and hospitalizations, including a surge of newly reported infections over the weekend that exceeded the state's capacity for logging cases.

The latest data from the Minnesota Department of Health added 7,173 new cases to the state's pandemic totals, a figure that captures reporting for Saturday and Sunday and continued a trend of rising daily cases over the past two weeks.

Over the weekend, however, the high volume of new cases meant that staffing wasn't sufficient to process all the data, the Health Department said. The tally reported on Tuesday is about 2,500 cases shy of the true count for Saturday and Sunday.

"We are taking steps to boost staff capacity, but we anticipate this backlog will impact new case data at least through Wednesday, Nov. 10," the Health Department said in a statement. "The marked increase in case growth is another reminder that the threat of COVID-19 remains very high in Minnesota."

The statewide tally for patients hospitalized with COVID-19 increased to 1,122, which is the highest figure thus far in 2021. The share of tests coming back positive is up to 9.1%, which is another record for 2021 and well beyond the state's 5% "caution" threshold.

Of course. MN is getting colder so more people are staying in doors breathing re-circulating furnace air

Just like the South had a spike during air conditioning season.

Covid, like Flu, will have a seasonality to it.

9% is really nothing. Here in Michigan we are 15%but have been well over 20% many times.
Top five states right now are Penn, Ohio, NY, Arizona, and us.

We just got our Moderna boosters at 8.5 months and we are still alive and healthy.

Yes. Which is why comparing the same months, rather than one month to the next, yields potentially more relevant information. In doing that, what do we see in Minnesota?

In September 2020, there were 241 deaths involving COVID in Minnesota. In September 2021, there were 376 such deaths, an increase of some 56%.

And while all of the data for October 2021 have not yet been compiled, to date there have been 509 COVID deaths reported in Minnesota for that month. By way of comparison, Minnesota incurred 495 COVID deaths in October 2020.

Notably, those 509 COVID deaths already reported for October 2021 represent the highest monthly total in the state of Minnesota since January 2021 and the fifth highest monthly total since the pandemic started 20 months ago (i.e., surpassed only in May 2020, November 2020, December 2020, and January 2021).

As of today, 72.5% of the population of Minnesota age 12 and older has been vaccinated, whereas 93.6% of the population age 65 and older has been. In September and October of 2020, of course, no one in the state had been.

We'll see what the winter of 2021-2022 will bring in Minnesota.

I know two families with it in my town. One of my neighbors died yesterday but he was old and had underlying conditions.

I have always believed that the tests are questionable. How many of these tests are false positives? Consider that the tests are administered in make shift places like parking lots, shopping malls and grocery stores and then processed by the thousands in some for profit factory lab with unknown quality controls. Who is processing these tests and is there any state oversight?

My husband, our adult son and I have all had it in the past two weeks.

Not fun but glad to get it over with and have immunity for the next three months. None of us got the clot shot.

A neighbor friend and our son’s roommates all had it in the past week and all were fully vaccinated. Their symptoms were very similar to ours.

It seems to be everywhere now just like the flu has been forever.
