Pharmaceuticals do this all the time, it’s called “evergreening”.
1. Develop drug, obtain patent
2. As patent approaches expiration, formulate a metabolite of the original compound
3. Submit for approval
4. Market the new drug as “better and more effective”
It’s corrupt, then. I’d think that at least the patent office would have some integrity. The swamp is everywhere in Washington.
