We’re not too stupid. People do what they are incentivized to do. How much does a Senator make in a year? You set yourself up and if you are voted out, you’ve got all your fallback plans which makes a Senator’s salary look pretty miniscule by comparison.
If your district is corrupt enough (or your state), then you’ll get reelected no matter what you do.
