US Navy sacks three over nuclear sub mishap

With the very real possibility that nuclear attack submarine USS Connecticut — which cost approximately US$3 billion to build — may be retired due to damage from hitting an undersea object, somebody had to pay the price.

Say goodnight to three naval careers.

According to ABC News, the US Navy has fired the top three leaders who were aboard the attack sub when it struck an uncharted sea mountain in the Pacific Ocean in early October.

Vice Adm. Karl Thomas, commander of the Navy’s Seventh Fleet, relieved the commanding officer of the submarine, Cmdr. Cameron Aljilani, the executive officer, Lt. Cmdr. Patrick Cashin, and the top enlisted sailor, Master Chief Sonar Technician Cory Rodgers.

The reliefs are “due to loss of confidence. Thomas determined sound judgement, prudent decision-making, and adherence to required procedures in navigation planning, watch team execution and risk management could have prevented the incident,” reads a statement from the Navy.

“Capt. John Witte will assume duties as interim Commanding Officer. Cmdr. Joe Sammur will assume duties as interim Executive Officer. Command Master Chief Paul Walters will assume duties as interim Chief of the Boat.”

At the time of the incident, the submarine was transiting through an area of the South China Sea, according to a US official.

Though the vessel struck an uncharted sea mountain, Vice Adm. Thomas determined the incident could have been prevented.

Responding out of complete ignorance of such things, but could how can something like this happen in an attack sub? China is laughing.

Uncharted don’t mean it wasn’t suspected. You tread softly in uncharted waters. The axe fell on the three at the top but they don’t train the crew, they just supply the leadership and politics. There’s more trouble down ranks. I been on the boats. It’s the team. One go we all go. My 2 effing cents worth.

It all depends on how you define transiting.

“According to ABC News, the US Navy has fired the top three leaders...”

abc news in their infinite wisdom probly doesn’t know the term “fired” in the navy doesn’t mean terminated...it means relived of current duties and reassigned.

Not to say it won’t be a black mark on permanent records.

It can happen very easily. Only about 5% of the world’s sea floor is mapped. They can use sonar, but it’s noisy.

Its a good question. And one the Navy is obviously not inclined to provide any details on.

Our submarines have a long history of operating in very difficult environments. Just saying.

Two destroyers; an amphibious assault ship; hundreds of vehicles, dozens of helicopters, a couple C-130s in Afghanistan; vaccine mandates; and now a nuclear attack sub.

Xi Jinping is racking up quite score in material and personnel combat-ineffective before the war over Taiwan even begins. And ten percent for Dai Bing Gai.

I bet Xi and Putin can hardly believe their good forture.

All they had to do was wait for someone like Biden to get elected. They’re no fools; they knew it would eventually happen.

There are only three boats in the Seawolf class and Jimmy Carter is the “special projects” boat.

Connecticut has been used as a spare parts boat for years already.

If it does have major damage it makes sense to park it and part it out for the Carter instead of spending another $1b to fix it.

The Navy will say nothing about fast moving Unidentified Submerged Objects (USOs), the alternate method of travel for UFOs

Notice how a commander gets fired for damaging a sub, but woke generals that lose wars and leave Americans behind do not. There really needs to be a single standard.

Question: Do they or do they not have their 20 years in? Lloyd Bucher was given a desk job to finish out his 20. (USS Pueblo 1968) No backup. Entire Navy was negligent.
