Paul Ryan pushed a bill that would have gutted the core of Obamacare -- the part that created a permanent entitlement for a federal expansion of Medicare. Had we killed that, the rest of it would eventually have crumbled.
But there were a lot of purists here and elsewhere who stamped their feet because it wasn't a "full repeal" -- for which we didn't have the votes -- and opposed that bill. So instead of repealing the key core of Obamacare and letting the rest eventually wither and die, we ended up with Obamacare being left "largely intact."
We almost got it through anyway despite the protestations of the full repeal purists, but they and their ally of convenience John McCain killed the bill in the Senate by one lousy vote.
Kamikaze democrats?
