Byron Brown is a 4 term (now 5) democrat standard machine politician from the "ghetto" who simply assumed he didn't have to campaign for the democrat primary. It was a supreme act of laziness and arrogance. The leftist radicals organized a small group of motivated socialistsd to hijack the nomination in the summer.

That shocked Brown into action for his write-in campaign. The socialist Walton's supporters were a few black/social-welfare-government-employed radicals, and squishy white liberals.
