There isn't actually all that much meat to this story other than the disgraceful request for a "reset" (unless the reset is a way to restart the exercise and make the most of the training time, any officer that requests a reset in a training exercise just because they're losing should be relieved of command for the thing they were training for).

Of course SOF units beat regular units in an exercise. The SOF units are more experienced, better trained on how to win, probably more familiar with the territory, and this last bit is important... trying to win.

The regular units, while otherwise quite capable, were trying to follow a script, expecting that careful execution of a script was going to be the key to success.

Anyone care to speculate how many senior Marine officers will be retiring and selling their comfortable homes in California? Peacetime American military leadership has been historically abysmal.
