YOKOSUKA, Japan - A U.S. Navy attack submarine was determined to have hit an uncharted underwater mountain last month, officials said in a statement following an investigation.

A statement issued Monday revealed that the nuclear-powered USS Connecticut struck a seamount — or underwater mountain.

you might run into a mountain.

It does happen. It's a simple math problem. If the chart says you are in a spot where the depth is X fathoms and your depth is Y fathoms and you subtract X - Y. If the difference is a positive number then you are cool. It's basic people.

Nuclear subs have near perfect inertial navigation. I think one crossed the Atlantic with a deviation of a few yards. In the 1980s...
But not all seamounts are charted. And I still have my doubts about the actual cause.

Uhh, don’t they have advanced underwater sonar type electronics or do they just navigate blind?

They use an inertial navigation system. Sonar is almost always used in passive mode, listening only. And since sea mounts don't generate any noise...

I saw the episode of Grand Tour that was done over there. Amazing amount of highway construction. You can understand why they are going to coal powered electric cars to conserve petroleum for the military.

I can still remember working on the Eisenhower when it had a rogue wave rip of an elevator and the amount of pictures etc that were taken of the incident. Hence, why I made the mention of seeing the pictures of this sub collision incident.

and then it is very unlikely. There are modes that have never been actively operated at sea. NOT ONE TIME.

Subs can and do use all active their sonar gear during live torpedo firing exercises. Especially at torpedo firing ranges. Same thing with surface ships.

Any World War II submarine Axis or Allied hit underwater mountain?

The max submerged depth of a World War 2 submarine is a fraction of a modern submarine.

I always liked the bow window idea on this fictitious sub form the 60's TV show.

Sounds more like a close encounter of the "Chicom kind".
Boats got way to close and bang.
Maybe playing chicken.
