This is one of the problems with socialism. If you work for the government then they control you.
Typically unions of big city employees have a lot of horsepower. Don’t understand why they aren’t involved now.
Even those who don't work directly for the government (airline employees, for example) can still find themselves within six degrees of it and close enough to suffer under its rule.
The colonists could take a stand against the Crown because most of them were farmers or owned their own shops. We have a standard of living today that trounces what they had in the eighteenth century, but we gave up no small amount of freedom in exchange for it.
