Are we to expend all this time, effort, money and 81,000 pages of documents for no purpose other than to secure another slap on the wrist as was administered to Kevin Kleinsmith? I am aware that is quite fashionable now to dismiss special investigator Durham’s aging investigation as just one more Washington two-step, but perhaps all of this is, after all, an effort to roll up Sussman and start up the food chain.
At least we have a right to hope.
Predictably, the post was met with replies that condescendingly charged naïveté for even suggesting that there should be hope, as though the import of the original post did not fully discount that likelihood.
With a Democrat president in office who has so obviously politicized and criminalized his Justice Department, can one doubt that Biden will freely pardon Sussman if convicted? Among those who would not doubt, at least not seriously doubt it, is Sussman himself.
Therefore, Sussman has little reason to flip and would be better off playing for acquittal, counting on a slap of the wrist if convicted and, finally, relying on a pardon if seriously sentenced to preserve his subsequent chances for a favorable position somewhere in the leftist universe. It is not inconceivable that he could end up, like McCabe, on CNN. Why is there greater leverage on Sussman now than could have been applied to Kevin Kleinsmith who emerged with his image, if not burnished, at least not fatally tarnished?
Unless Durham has something more, what could be motivating him to continue now other than a rather obsessive sense of justice? The likely outcome is that it will not put Sussman away for long time and thus have small deterrent value and equally small power to flip Sussman, so why is Durham undertaking this action which might reflect badly on himself when it comes to the end?
“So why is Durham undertaking this action which might reflect badly on himself when it comes to the end?”
His job is to run out the clock. Once he does that he will be offered a very lucrative position at a top flight law firm or lobbying group.
