It is probably a struggle between the members and leadership. This happened with the steel and auto workers during the election, and its going on right now with the IAM (machinists and aerospace workers) where leadership supports the administration’s on covid and the membership doesn’t.
Big unions are an arm of the socialist, democrat party. The more pain they inflict upon the masses, makes it easier for big government to come to their “rescue”.
Once those masses are dependent upon the government for basic life necessities, the battle is over, they win.

As to why, I suspect that it’s part of the ‘adjustment’ needed for Americans to get used to living a few notches down, where they will no longer have plenty and will live closer to the rest of the non-Western world.
