Trains works in Europe because they have much smaller distances to cover, they have been developing their cities around the use of trains for about 175 years and the re-built many cities post WW2 around using trains to move commuter traffic.
Mass transit in the USA, however, has been an endless government budgetary black hole that never produces a fraction of the value it costs.

I am also pointing out that CWII will not be North v. South, or East v. West. It will be Rural v. Urban. Trains will be the primary method the Urbanites will move goods between Urban centers while planes will continue to be used for moving people across ‘fly-over country’.
We need to plan accordingly.
