Well, the Administration could try to pass something through Congress that would weaken the power of the unions, but I’m guessing that won’t happen.

Imho the Jobama regime is setting the stage to hand over control of the Port of LA to the Chicoms. GW Bush tried to do the same thing until democrat NY Senator Schmukey put a stop to it.

Here you see the result of “Just in time” production and supply methods: one element in the chain has a cough, and the entire system catches pneumonia and cannot work any more.

When things run smoothly, JIT works GREAT, saving time, money and allows asset divestment (selling physical properties to reduce tax overhead) because storage is in the vehicles enroute to the factories.

Any kind of hiccup in the system, and JIT shows its inherent weakness: if ONE part of the process is stuck on a truck (warehouse unit) because of snow, or port backup, or whatever, productions STOPS.

While warehousing is not free, the costs involved show up as minimal when compared to the complete arrest of ALL production when one component is unavailable for a short term.

Yes and no: those pre-def diesels are NOT allowed on Cali roads. THAT is the very root of the problem.

JIT, Just In Time, is also known as the Toyota Production System. It was developed over decades by Toyota and involves Japanese firms that work closely together.

American MBAs, who specialize in being short-sighted and stupid, ignore any aspect of what Toyota created that can’t be reduced to pennies. So naturally they created a version that is far more vulnerable and prone to disaster.

if trump were president, he’d declare a national emergency and order in military crane operators and military trucks and truck drivers to fill any time slots the port operators were unable to fill ...

Maybe Hunter Biden can resolve this by getting truck driving job for $50,000 per hour from a Chinese company.

I don’t know whether you have seen my postings regarding MBAs, but I will take this opportunity to let you know that my loathing for MBAs is exceeded by NOTHING I can imagine. Ignorant know-it-alls that utterly RUIN everything they touch.

And you’re right. The sooner that American business refuses to hire MBAs and the sooner that they fire every one that they have, the sooner American industry will return to greatness.

offer enough money and you will get people. most those help wanted are retail and jobs and other that are borderline livable wage. long term problem they cant get experienced people so they will have to train newbies. the help wanted signs are there because idiots gave a 400 Doller bonus to unemployment. that no longer is being handed out and a lot of those that are choosing to not work eventually will have to work if they want to eat.

I assume a lot of these ships don’t go back directly to China, or, do some do so? What are they all carrying when they depart US ports? Raw materials that take up as much volume as the incoming finished (mostly) goods? Is it cheaper to build a shipload of containers in China than it is to ship a load back?

Something here doesn’t quite add up. But I’m guessing there is more complexity than meets the eye.

Anything that slows the importation, and increases the cost of Chinese goods is a very, very good thing.

In all conceivable scenarios.

I couldn’t know every detail. I play my part. I don’t import directly but I do have little choice in buying some amount of imported goods or intermediate goods using imports. I manufacture and distribute and export finished goods. I know that some of what I buy consists of imported stuff but the bulk of what I buy is made local, even if some part of that is imported.

It is my understanding that the USA imports five containers for every one we export to Asia. Sure some of them can be used domestically but at that rate we end up with miles and miles of five-high stacks of empty containers.

Depends on the ship, but they can hold up to 30,000 containers per ship. I think those are the best of the best so I figure a typical ship is maybe 10,000-15,000 containers. Now multiply by 100 ships anchored off the coast each month. It’s a massive issue. The companies with the big profit margins can pay to jump the line. The commodity and input material producers don’t have the money to pay to jump the line so they wait their turn. There is a shortage of intermediate materials as a result. That is driving inflation in what we ordinarily think of as general consumer goods. You can’t make cereals, foods, textiles, cosmetics, household cleaners etc without these intermediate goods.

The problem in Savanna is trucking, not ship offloading. The cranes are unloading the intermodal containers, but there aren’t enough trailer chassis for the containers. Product is stacked so high and wide that when chassis are found, it can take sometimes days to dig out a container for a specific receiver.

It’s getting absolutely insane at our ports.

Now I would expect that the feds could overrule the leftist Newsoms California trucking emissions rules under interstate commerce rules?

And they haven’t so far?

Interesting.

All of this because of off shoring and “free” ( actually fu— ) trade.
