They don’t mention retirement credentials, but it does appear an employee would have to get some documentation regarding service signed off on by a supervisor in the police department. When you retire, you tell your boss and submit paperwork to HR. HR then coordinates with the Pension agency. If you retire effective immediately it might be a while before you get the first pension payment and it will likely be reduced at least 20% for a few months until work history is verified. Let's say paperwork gets slow walked for 6 months. You will eventually get a lump sum payment for the money withheld.
