In this case, not sad, and not shocking. If there is a heaven and hell, he will be burning for eternity for his sins.
Back in the day he would have been reported as having died from pneumonia complications.
Powell had a rare, clear-cut opportunity to rid the world of evil. A despot. A dictator. A torturer and killer of his fellow man. A genocidal maniac.
The reasons for the Kuwait action or Saddam Hussein’s previous role as a US proxy were unimportant at the time. And, as we know, we ended up going and taking him out later anyway. More blood & treasure, as it were.
Powell, the so-called honorable military man, instead advised and even demanded a U-turn. And got it.
In his post-military life Powell was a near-constant practitioner of the sins of pride and bearing false witness. One might think that someone so accomplished and apparently strong in character would decline any media come-ons to metaphorically stab his ostensible colleagues in the back but Powell relished such chances and seemed particularly susceptible to cheap media flattery.
It is said that his wife was staunchly opposed to any run for the presidency. In this, at least, she was correct about the rough and tumble of politics. But that certainly didn’t prevent her husband from practicing the worst sort of politics - sniping from the sidelines.
He will have to face his God now and explain.
