Russia on Saturday recorded 1,000 Covid-related deaths in a single day for the first time since the pandemic began.
The figure had been rising all week, with the Kremlin blaming the Russian people for not taking up vaccination.
Only about a third of the population has had a jab, amid wide distrust of the vaccines.
Russia's figure of 222,000 Covid deaths is the highest in Europe, with another 33,000 infections reported on Saturday.
The government has avoided bringing in strict restrictions because it says it needs to keep the economy working.
The Kremlin has instead focused on public apathy on vaccination.

More likely vaccine deaths pass 1000.
With covid, or From covid?........
I've been looking into this, there seem to be no reports about vaccine-caused deaths. Not too surprising, this is old technology.
On the other hand, there were reports about deaths from covid among the vaccinated, which brings up the question of just how effective it is.
The oddest thing to me is why they don't try Ivermectin? It is not that Putin must play exactly the same game as the West.
Lockdowns don’t work.
Masks don’t work.
The “vaccines” don’t work.
Ivermectin works.
The Russian vaccine doesnβt do anything.
BELIEVING anything from Russia or BBC is a fools errand.
I guess we can rule out vodka as a miracle cure then.
