A record 4.3 million Americans voluntarily quit their jobs in August according to the latest data from the US Department of Labor.
Approximately 4 million people per month have been leaving their jobs since the spring, as part of a trend that has become known as the Great Resignation.
It is a sign that workers believe they have leverage in a jobs market defined by labour shortages, as the economy rebalances in what is hoped to be the tapering off of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Wages are rising quickly as businesses struggle to hire staff and many companies are adding signing bonuses and reviewing benefits packages in the hope of attracting new employees and retaining existing talent.
The number of people resigning is particularly high in the leisure and hospitality sector, but people are quitting their jobs across a whole range of industries, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.
Professional and business services, healthcare and social assistance, and retail all saw huge numbers of resignations in August.
According to the monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary (Jolts) report, there were 10.4 million job openings at the end of August – down from July’s figure but still near a record high.
The number of unemployed workers per job opening crept up slightly over the month, but there are still more jobs out there than workers available to fill them.

How is everyone quitting their jobs? Welfare can’t be that extensive.
It’s just the beginning. I’d guess it’s obvious tens of millions won’t be obeying or complying.
There a large number of issues here.
Here are the issues that I can think of. I am sure others can come up with additional ones
Aging workforce.
Lots of people pulled the trigger during Covid and retired. We have an inverted age pyramid. More older people at the top fewer younger people entering the workforce
Spouses leaving the work force.
Lot of families, due to covid, have re-assessed the two income family model. Covid forced them to make adjustments. They decided now that the positive gains of having 1 parent at home off sets the 2nd income .
End of the 2 job economy.
I think people would be surprised how many workers work multiple jobs. So a tight labor market and growing opportunities at their primary job encourage them to quit their 2nd job
The rise of the gig economy.
Covid forced a lot of people into using home delivery services. 10s of millions of them found they liked using them. Companies were forced to look at jobs to decide what can be done at home. It be interesting study to find out how many workers left the work force to do gig work or work at home.
Excessive Government handouts
I believe this is overstated since the unemployment benefits were scaled back without a large jump in people returning to work. But being over stated does not mean they do not have an impact. Raising the food stamp monthly benefit and the increase in the Earned Income Tax credit are having an impact

In the internet economy, not many workers will actually be needed. But they do need voters, and customers for their welfare bureaucracy.
People see others around them getting stuff for free, and figure, why not me?
But that’s short-term thinking (and a “health emergency” focuses people on the short-term).
Short staffs = overwork for those who remain = short tempers = hostile work environment = shove it.

Smart people won't quit. They go to work as usual, and if the employers wants to terminate the employee for refusing to get these injections, fire them! I would suggest they not quit, but force the employer to fire them, get the reason why in writing, but do not sign it.☺
There will be plenty of employers who opt not to enforce these punitive questionable mandates. Or they can start their own businesses. Btw, some people only work for an employer for a year or two and they move on. Why should they risk something forced upon them by a temporary employer, which could possibly have a negative impact on them for the rest of their lives?
Well, lets see. Stay home and we’ll give you money. And you’re not allowed to go to work unless we can inject you with our magical mystery juice. Not surprising.
