Once the Haitians realized they destroyed their economy by getting back at their former masters by chopping down thousands of coffee trees on the plantations I’d say the beatings increased in severity.
There weren’t whites left to beat; they deliberately murdered the remaining whites (including women and children). That was part of the reparations demanded by France in return for not invading the island.
I believe this is why that country is the most cursed place on Earth; it has been independent for more than two centuries and has reverted to the Stone Age - yet nobody else cares.
