12 countries apply for European funding for construction of fences to prevent illegal migration

Twelve European Union countries, including Greece, Austria, Poland and Hungary, have asked Brussels to fund EU construction of fences along its borders to prevent migrants from arriving. It is reported by DW.

"A natural barrier seems to be an effective border protection measure, serving the interests of the whole EU and not just the front-line countries," said their interior ministers in a letter sent to the European Commission.

According to the ministers of Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania and Latvia, Poland and Slovakia "this legitimate measure should be the subject of additional and adequate funding in the European budget."

These countries are also calling for "a strong response to tackling the tools of illegal immigration and hybrid threats."

"No third country should be able to use our asylum system to exert political pressure and blackmail the EU and its member states or to take advantage of the current situation in Afghanistan," the ministers added.

Poland, like Lithuania, began building barbed wire fences on part of its border with Belarus. Hungary had erected such a fence on its border with Serbia during the 2015 immigration crisis.

In August, the European Commission voted in favor of building a fence between Lithuania and Belarus, but noted that the project would not be funded by Community funds.

Brussels will never agree to this. Heck, even Trump didn’t succeed in getting Mexico to pay for the wall. You want a wall, you pay for it your darn self.

“...Trump didn’t succeed in getting Mexico to pay for the wall....”

Not in dollar and cents, but thy paid in other ways. The Mexican army was sent to the border and migrants were held in Mexico for their US immigration interviews. Mexico did day.
