Unfortunately, Trump's comment about how you don't know a good leader until they are already in the position of leadership.

But I agree with you, the GOP needs better leaders/fighters. Someone, likely Rush said that the mark of a steadfast conservative is someone who's been tried and tested by the progressives and came out swinging instead of caving. I think that is what we need in the GOP. Fighters. Trump is a fighter. Pence, Romney, McConnell... you can see them wilt at the first sign of resistance.
