Death camp guard, 100, refuses to make a statement as he becomes the oldest person ever tried for Nazi-era crimes

A 100-year-old concentration camp guard refused to make a statement as he became the oldest man to go on trial for Nazi-era crimes today.

The centenarian, identified only as Josef S, also hid his face from cameras as he appeared in court in Germany charged with complicity in 3,518 murders at the Sachsenhausen death camp between 1942 and 1954.

Charges against Josef, who was an SS paramilitary and a camp watchman, include aiding and abetting the 'execution by firing squad of Soviet prisoners of war in 1942' and the murder of prisoners 'using the poisonous gas Zyklon B'.

Josef's refusal to speak is significant because trials of former guards provide a chance to amass new evidence about what happened at Nazi death camps and enter in into historical record.

Other guards - including 'Bookkeeper of Auschwitz' Oskar Groening - have spoken about their activities at the camps during their trials.

The bespectacled man answered the judge with a clear voice when asked about his name, age and home address.

A widower since 1986, he was visibly proud when he replied that he will 'celebrate my 101st birthday, on November 16.'

At the risk of sounding like Cankles: at this point what difference does it make?

1944, not 1954 I’d assume.

Yup—the pfascists will be brought to justice in future Nuremberg trials.

The international trials will have thousands of defendants and will probably run for decades.

The camp was liberated by the soviets in April 1945 so I am thinking the “...1942 and 1954” is just a transposition error.

At this point a life sentence has no meaning and what about the 76 year old memories of witnesses the youngest of which would likely be in their late 80s?

Some of the camps in the Eastern part of Germany were taken over by the NKVD after the war and continued to function.

I’m glad this guy is feeling the discomfort he’s going through. How many elderly people did execute or incinerate?

Agreed. COVID has demonstrated that regardless of nationality, ethnicity, religion humans are still capable of repeating atrocities, torchering, murdering or imprisoning their neighbor for anything as long as the government gives them the authority do so.

I predict years from now the good guys will win the arguments over things like plandemic and abortion. Then the Dims will claim the parties “switched sides” like the lie they’ve been touting to explain why their side supported segregation and even slavery.

The key phrase in the article is “aiding and abetting“. Was this guy “abetting” the executions merely by being present as a camp guard? If so, prosecuting him would be unfair.

But if there is solid evidence that he actually killed innocents, then prosecute him to the max, regardless of his age.

It makes all the difference. This SS bastard shouldn’t be allowed to die peacefully in his sleep as the millions he helped to kill didn’t get that chance.

I like punishment for crime for deterrence. Since he’s hardly a threat going forward and, hopefully, nobody younger than him is trying to emulate him, I see no reason to punish him for something he did almost 80 years ago.

I agree that anyone who volunteered for the SS knew what they were about.

Will the responsible soviets who murdered all those Polish officers during WW2 be brought to trial. (No fan of nazis by any stretch. Less of a fan of communist red terror scum)
