The Collins class replacement program was a mess from the outset.

The Australians surveyed available technologies and decided on the Japanese, German and French designs. On technical and cost basis the Japanese design appeared to be superior; however, a deal breaker was that Japan wanted to build their design in Japanese shipyards. The Aussies insisted on building the subs in Australia. This involved much higher costs as an existing shipyard must me modernized to build the new subs and the workers needed to be trained for the new design. Germany had the same problem. Only the French were willing to invest in building the infrastructure in Australia and train the workforce, for a price of course.

Contracts were signed, the French started to build the needed facilities, and costs escalated. Now, the US steps in, apparently sells the Aussies on a nuclear powered sub which had been rejected early in the process, in large part because they knew that the US would never allow a foreign country to build their design. It's no wonder the French are pissed.

That China Joe and his handlers didn't have this background available is just not believable. so now it will be even more years before Australia's two operational subs can be replaced.

“You ever work with a French company?”

I worked for Schlumberger Defense, a French company. Lying, unethical, lazy...(where’s my thesaurus?) They sent us hardware all sighed off and passed tests along with the data. The hardware was missing the power supplies, which they hadn’t finished yet. But they lied about the data and shipped the equipment anyway because there was nothing we, a subsidiary, could do about it. They got paid and everybody there got their deliver early bonus. We had to face the customer and say, “Sorry. Problems. We’ll get back to you.” We got late fees as well as paying early delivery bonuses.

I would never...NEVER buy anything French. As one engineer said, “The French copy no one. And, nobody copies the French.”

Before the Trump Era, and the expose of China as a reliable foe.

Actually the decision to replace the Collins class dates to around 2009.

The idea was in fact to counter the growing Chinese blue water threat. The US was mostly on board, as long as US contractors could make money on things like fire control systems, etc. The whole flustercluck was due to Australian politics, labor unions, and international companies vying for big bucks.

LOL

I will buy German engineered stuff. Russian engineered stuff. I LOVE northern Italy stuff (they make some very artistic piping).

France? Well we had to order French made things for a plant I was working with (in Brittany). Heat exchangers with no seals. Pumps with wrong bolt patterns. Electrical systems that make the dark days of English Electrical Engineering look like the sun...

My counterpart was smuggling English and German equipment in, while selling the French crap to Africa. I thought was a pretty horrible thing to do to whoever was buying it in Africa.
