Many enterprises have shifted their orders or some production capacities from Vietnam to China amid COVID-19 lockdowns in the Southeast Asian country, according to a Vietnamese report. .
Google's Pixel 6 smartphone and Apple's latest AirPods are now being produced in China instead of Vietnam, while shipments of Amazon's smart doorbells, surveillance cameras, and speakers produced in northern Vietnam have seen shipment delays since May, the Saigon Times report noted.
With the supply chain in Vietnam being disrupted by the lockdowns, many enterprises have sought supply from alternative production bases, with China being the top choice.
Protective clothing maker Lakeland Industries has recently hired a new president to oversee production relocation from Vietnam to China, eyeing China's stability in production amid the pandemic.
US-based interior design company LoveSac CEO Shawn Nelson also pointed out that his company is also shifting its orders from Vietnam to China. Although the US tariff will add up to the costs, the company will treat order fulfillment as the priority and will cancel its promotion activities and discounts to save costs.
Research firm BTIG believes Vietnam's instability in production is expected to seriously undermine shipments to the end market in the fourth quarter of 2021 and the first half of 2022.
