Havana (CNN)Cuba's state media on Sunday lashed out after nearly a dozen Cuban baseball players defected in Mexico -- believed to be one of the country's largest and most embarrassing known incidents of mass defection in years.

Eleven young baseball players defected from the national team during a tournament for players under the age of 23, which began last month. The remaining Cuban players on the team are due to return to the communist-run island on Monday.

A statement from Cuba's National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) slammed the missing players for "weak morals and ethics."

Fidel would have just killed their families.

It would be curious if the Dodgers suddenly ended up with three or four four-star Cuban pitchers, ready for the 2022 season. So far, no names have been published on the defecting crew.

Well that’s embarrassing, Mexico’s President just in the last couple days was praising Castro / Cuba, and slamming the USA over the embargo.

The 18-year-old pitcher Luis Dany Morales was the one who broke the ice, and he was followed on successive days by fellow pitchers Dariel Fernandez, Yeiniel Zayas and Ubert Mejias, infielder Miguel Antonio Gonzalez, catcher Loidel Rodriguez and outfielders Reynaldo Lazaga and Diasmany Palacios, concluding with the top pitcher of the squad, Brayan Chi.

After the bronze match ended Saturday, the outfielders Loidel Chapellí and Yandy Yanes joined to make the number of desertions eleven. And watch out, before they touch the island, the list could increase.

Good luck to all of them and somebody needs to send them a plane so they can come to America and play some baseball.

Fidel would have just killed their families

Exactly. This mass defection signals that the young men calculate both that they can do this without fatal consequences for their families, and, given how few defectors were willing to take the leap when Fidel was alive and they knew they could never return to their homeland, that they expect to be able to return, if he only to visit, to a post Communist Cuba. I hope they are right on both counts.

Trump should have invaded Cuba while he was President.

Marlins are a draw for Cubans defectors.
More Cubans in Miami than most cities in Cuba.

There are enough Cuban players in MLB they could(should) have their own team. I say put them in Miami and disperse the American ballplayers around the league. When they win the championship will Cuba be proud or embarrassed?
