What’s the age range of those you are seeing in ICU? Do they have comorbidity issues?
What you’re saying is roughly the same as the hospital heads in FL (in the DeSantis meeting a month or so ago) were saying as well. That interview is probably on YouTube (unless they’ve taken it down).
The first big waves before the vaxxes, we saw 50 years on up white guys, many with co-morbidities or just old age related weakened immune systems. We saw many overweight black males 35 on up. Those two groups when they hit the ICU generally didn’t do well. Chinese/korean/Japanese women were sick 50’s -80’s but recovered very well. Older Hispanic women tended to recover slowly but didn’t die. 50-80’s black women also recovered slowly but the heavier they were with diabetes and heart issues, the more they died off. Skinny white old women 45 on up with no comorbidities were generally 3 days ICU, feeling better, than transferred out. (With co-morbidities like copd...not so well and the heavier, the worse off.) Mostly we saw Overweight men and women with lots of co-morbid issues from 45 on up across white, black, hispanic populations very sick in general with a near mortality of 90 percent at the beginning.(July -December 2020)
Then the numbers tailed off after January and the local vaxxes were being done in earnest. We saw some weeks with few or no covids coming to the ICU but there were larger numbers of younger skewing covids admitted downstairs in the general floors, but nothing over-whelming. From July on though the numbers took off like a rocket; no one in this area was saying Delta, but no one was really testing. The numbers getting real sick and coming to our ICU were skewing younger and very overweight...we were seeing pregnant, large overweight minority ladies(we were able to save them and their babies). No white pregnant ladies coming to ICU, some came in downstairs but left after a few days.
What we were seeing is a younger skewing population, 95 % unvaxxed, mostly minority but we saw an uptick of 30 something Junior Samples type overweight white males very sick and not recovering. I can say that the pre-ICU treatment protocols rarely included Ivermectin or Hydroxy; I saw them used sometimes but it was hit or miss.
The issue was the people who got sent to the ICU from the floors or directly from the ICU had delayed seeking help until about the 7th to 10th day of their illness when the bottom was dropping out on them. So many early measures therapeutics just wouldn’t work. Remdesivir was hit or miss and still is. I think it is being given when it already too late to work and I think it is often given when the kidneys are already under stress; thus the Rem treatments just make things worse so it’s onto slow dialysis and pressors for hypotension. Convalescent plasma has gone away...not shown to work in late stages..if ever at all!
80 percent covid mortality is what we are seeing in the ICU’s and maybe we save 2 out of every 5 who meet the criteria for ecmo. (Below age 60, BMI below 35, few or no co-morbidities)
Ages currently have skewed lower in averages 27 to old age vs 40 to old age from a years ago. You might find 8-10 on our unit with 5-6 over weight comobidity ridden minority black or hispanics males and females, with a young white guy thrown in, 35 to 65 age range(not gonna make it), a few grizzled 55 to old age white guys with copd, heart, diabetes, substance abuse issues(not gonna make it), a poor meemaw or 2 any race on some high flow or bipap(50-50 chance of making it), a cranky, no comorbidity post menopausal amish mennonite lady who faithfully coughs and deep breathes on high flow, faithfully every hour(near 100 per cent survival!)
