FALL SALE | 1¢/DAY FOR 4 MONTHS ADVERTISEMENT BUSINESS WBEZ and Chicago Sun-Times agree to pursue merger as nonprofit news organization By ROBERT CHANNICK CHICAGO TRIBUNE SEP 30, 2021 AT 9:17 AM
Chicago Public Media and the Chicago Sun-Times have signed a nonbinding letter of intent to “explore joining” WBEZ-FM 91.5 and the financially struggling daily newspaper under the public radio station’s nonprofit parent company.
The letter of intent has been approved by the Chicago Public Media board and Sun-Times ownership, but there is no agreement in place as they pursue a possible merger, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

"It has been owned since the summer of 2017 by a group of labor unions brought together by businessman and former Ald. Edwin Eisendrath (43rd) to block a bid by the Chicago Tribune’s parent company to take over its competitor."

This thing will be looking for a Congressional bailout right after all the midterm ad revenue dries up.
I haven’t listened to WBEZ since they dropped their (very good) evening/overnight jazz programming some years ago.
“ Murdoch was forced to sell the Sun-Times in 1986 after acquiring WFLD-Ch. 32 because of Federal Communications Commission cross-ownership restrictions.”
Does this still apply, and does it apply to non-profits?
This sounds like a way to funnel taxpayer dollars to unions and libs.
Nonprofit = taxpayers foot the bill
Non-profit? No, that should be denied. However, if they apply for a non-news news organization, I don’t know how you argue against that.
If their news is “woke” and slanted, they will continue to be a “non-profit news organization” forever.
Non-profit means they’re paid by the taxpayers.
Reminds me of the old joke:
“We are a non profit corporation—we don’t want to be one, but we are one.”
Let them die.
The Ministry of Propaganda is being forced to merge outlets.
Shows that their influence is shrinking.
Mainstream “news” has been “non-profit” for years! Faux News has run big profits but that is likely over. Legacy rags like Time, Atlantic, Newsweak and WaCompost only still exist because Tech billionaires subsidise them to control influence in DC. NY Slimes and Wall Street Journal have held out longer due to rich baby boomers buying digital subscriptions on their China-made iPhones.
Mike Royko is living large in heaven.
These idiots will soon enough be in cardboard boxes on Lower Wacker.
The Sun-Times is a tabloid. It always had plenty of ads . . . no, not for Carson-Pirie-Scott or Marshall Field’s, but for car dealerships, Jewel/Osco, movies, and the electronics store du jour. Without the ads it will feel more like a student newspaper.
Everyone on the paper had to know they were on borrowed time when they sold the old headquarters building to the Trump Organization more than a decade ago. Sionara suckers!
