We were in our local Cambodian-run donut shop the other day, and I told Little Flash A about the expression “betting dollars to donuts”, being so sure of yourself that you give the other guy heavy odds, by putting a whole dollar up against something dirt cheap.
I then told him “these days, take the donuts”. The small ones were $1.50 each.

There was a science fiction time travel story in which the guy tried to tell the one in the good old days how bad our future became. Maybe 1980s.
“You know 2 cents plain? (club soda or seltzer at old delis and lunch places).
“Yeah?”
“It’s a dollar.” (when Perrier started taking off in popularity)
