Russia sharply escalated a campaign against jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny on Tuesday, opening a new criminal case against President Putin’s fiercest domestic critic that could allow the authorities to hand him another decade in jail.
In a case condemned by the West, Navalny, 45, is already serving two-and-a-half years in prison for parole violations he says were trumped up to thwart his political ambitions.
His allies have had their homes raided, their freedom of movement restricted, or fled abroad after a court in June ruled their activities to be extremist and designed to stir up social unrest.

Good, if not here, then Russia. But at least one country holding accountable ‘journalists’ who use their position to be PLAYERS. Keep it up, Putin!
Navalny made his own bed. He deserves to sleep in it. His latest stunt of promoting Communists because they aren’t United Russia shows that he is a blatant opportunist.
Navalny is a jerk....guy isn’t too swift when it comes to using grey matter. He’s nothing more than another attention seeker along with his wife... and not in the least bit sufficient to run a country.
For me, Navalny’s flop during the September elections is a surprise, meaning his force is practically over.
I have no idea why did they refuse to run, and the “smart voting” where they called to vote for communists instead of the moderate left democrats who are technically closer to the Navalny’s platform is another mystery.
If we are pretending that the “smart voting” worked, the only consequence is the total elimination of the left, not counting communists, from the House.
