Of course I did ... I “enjoyed” an element of “the narrative” .... and came to believe Robert McNamara was an idiot and got a lot of good men killed .... it sparked my belief that Viet Nam was an excellent way to get rid of the “angry young man”, those of us that were educated and intelligent and were becoming political en masse .....
Everyone seems to be overlooking the horrific McNamara’s 100,000 (or Project 100,000)
This program drafted sub-par men for combat.
A 1995 review of McNamara’s book In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam in the Washington Monthly severely criticized the project, writing that:
“the program offered a one-way ticket to Vietnam, where these men fought and died in disproportionate numbers ... the men of the ‘Moron Corps’ provided the necessary cannon fodder to help evade the political horror of dropping student deferments or calling up the reserves, which were sanctuaries for the lily-white.”
This explains a lot about combat deaths in RVN as well.
People thank me for my service all the time and I tell them I was a Cold Warrior thus don’t deserve to be lauded. Guys like you and those combat vets who trained me and put up with that disrespect are America’s true heroes who go shafted with minimal benefits and societal rejection. I thank the people back on behalf of those warriors. And thank you.
Thank you, buddy - that means a lot.
