-PJJust elected House Minority Whip Nancy Pelosi D-Calif., holds a whip she got from outgoing House Minority Leader Rep. David Bonior, D-Mich,, Wednesday Oct. 10, 2001 in Washington. Pelosi defeated Rep. Stenny Hoyer, D-Md. for the Democratic whip post in the House of Representatives...
Hoyer, her opponent, had expressed concern that a San Francisco Democrat would have a hard time appealing to moderate and rural voters when Democrats need to reach out to the political center.
Asked whether her San Francisco pedigree might turn off swing voters from other parts of the country, Pelosi brandished her new whip with a menacing smile.
"I don't know why you say that," she laughed, going on to say the liberal- conservative divide is an old formula that overlooks the Bay Area's entrepreneurial spirit.
